2026 School Nursing is my Superpower Nominee:
| Melissa Nagel, Laurel School District, PA |
Some superpowers are loud and obvious—but Melissa Nagel’s are the kind that quietly hold an entire school together. Melissa is the definition of compassionate care. She is endlessly sweet and kind, yet paired with an incredible intuition that sets her apart. She knows every student as an individual—not just by name, but by personality, needs, and even intent. She can instantly tell the difference between a child who truly needs to go home and one who may just need a little reassurance, guidance, or a moment to regroup. That level of awareness doesn’t just come from training—it comes from genuine connection. Her flexibility is another one of her superpowers. Melissa is always willing to jump in wherever she is needed, adapting at a moment’s notice to support any building in the district. No matter where she is, she brings consistency, calm, and competence. Melissa is also a master of multitasking. She can handle the fast pace of a busy health office seamlessly—whether it’s making an ice pack in seconds, applying a bandage to a scraped knee, or managing multiple student needs at once—while still ensuring every child feels seen and cared for. What truly makes Melissa exceptional, though, is her heart. She never misses an important moment in a colleague’s life and goes out of her way to check in, offering support through a thoughtful text or phone call. She builds relationships that extend beyond the workplace, creating a culture of care among staff just as much as with students. And somehow, in the midst of all of this, Melissa balances her professional dedication with being fully present for her own child and his demanding sports schedule—demonstrating the same commitment and love at home as she does at school. Melissa Nagel is more than a school nurse—she is a constant, a comfort, and a quiet force of good in every building she supports. Her compassion, adaptability, and unwavering care make her truly deserving of recognition as an outstanding school nurse.
